Retiroparken, Molde – A Living Legacy Under Threat On 22 May , the community will gather to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity —a day recognized globally to highlight the importance of ecosystems. This year, the day will hold special significance in Molde. It will serve as a platform to honor the 150-year legacy of Retiroparken, to elevate the voice of citizens. Retiroparken stands as one of Norway’s most treasured urban green spaces. The park was established in 1875, during a time when Norway’s coastal towns were flourishing thanks to the rise of the fishing and shipping industries. Today, Retiroparken is a vibrant example of urban rewilding. Its forest floor is alive with mosses, fungi, and understory plants. Birds nest in its mature trees. Pollinators hum through wildflowers. A new study has strengthened calls for coordinated action on climate change and nature loss , by calculating the CO2 emissions countries could save if they conserve and restore ecosystems on land, in line with proposed international targets for nature conservation. It comes ahead of Biodiversity Day at the COP27 climate conference , on November 16, during which ministers, business and community leaders from around the world will discuss the current state of nature, showcase current action on ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions and strive to inspire and enact greater commitments to jointly tackle climate change and nature loss.
